About Us

Vimala McClure

Founder of IAIM

“I believe that by fostering and encouraging Infant Massage and other cultural traditions which enhance the parent-baby bond, and by helping create more family-centered values in our culture, we will begin to see whole generations expressing more compassion toward and responsibility for their fellow human beings.”
“I believe that babies are aware human beings who deserve respect, tenderness, and warmth, and above all, a listening heart. When we listen to our infants with our hearts, we discover whatever it is that we want to know.”
Following her experiences working in an orphanage in northern India, Vimala brought the age-old practice of infant massage to the West. Vimala says she had a need to “do something for others, to realize one’s greatest potential and to contribute to the welfare of humanity.”
In 1978, at the request of local childbirth educators, she developed a training program, based on the massage she had learned in India, and had started sharing in her Denver, Colorado community. She incorporated Swedish and reflexology methods and yoga poses, all adapted for babies. She named the strokes, designed a special routine for colicky babies, and developed a course for parents that became the core curriculum for IAIM.
Later in 1978, Vimala published her groundbreaking first book, Infant Massage: A Handbook for Loving Parents. The theory, curriculum and focus that Vimala writes about are unique and have been carefully developed and refined through research and practical experience since first introduced in 1976.
